Stormy Monday

In economically depressed Newcastle, an American businessman named Cosmo arrives with plans to buy up property for a large redevelopment scheme. His ambition runs into an obstacle in Finney, the owner of a jazz club called the Key Club, who refuses to sell. As the city prepares for a promotional American Week backed by local politicians, a club attendant named Brendan and a waitress named Kate meet and become involved with each other, while Cosmo pursues his aims through whatever means he can.

Stormy Monday is a thriller directed and written by Mike Figgis, and it was his first feature film, preceding Internal Affairs, Mr. Jones and Leaving Las Vegas in his filmography. Melanie Griffith and Tommy Lee Jones play Kate and Cosmo, with Sting as Finney, Sean Bean as Brendan and Alison Steadman as the Mayor. Nigel Stafford-Clark produced the British-American production, which runs 93 minutes.

The film took about 2 million dollars at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.2 from roughly 4,900 votes, while on TMDB it has a 5.7 from 89 votes. A film critics' rating stands at 6.9 from 18 reviews, above both audience scores.
