Stolen Kisses

Stolen Kisses continues the story of Antoine Doinel, the character François Truffaut first introduced in The 400 Blows. Dishonourably discharged from the army at twenty, Antoine returns to Paris and looks up Christine Darbon, whose father finds him work as a night porter in a hotel. He loses that job almost at once, through the interference of a private detective, who then offers him a place in his agency. Assigned to investigate why the staff of a shoe shop resent its owner, Georges Tabard, Antoine meets the man's wife, Fabienne, and becomes involved with her while his feelings for Christine remain unresolved.

The film is the seventh of the fourteen features Truffaut directed, following Fahrenheit 451 and preceding The Bride Wore Black. He wrote the screenplay with Claude de Givray and Bernard Revon, and produced it with Marcel Berbert. Jean-Pierre Léaud again plays Antoine, with Claude Jade as Christine, Delphine Seyrig as Fabienne and Michael Lonsdale as her husband; Daniel Ceccaldi and Claire Duhamel appear as Christine's parents, among a credited cast of thirty-five.

Released in France in September 1968, the film runs ninety minutes and had a worldwide box office of about two million dollars. On IMDb it holds 7.5 out of 10 from roughly sixteen thousand votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.3 from just under five hundred. A critics' rating of 7.9 from twenty-nine reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
