The Veil
Short description
A woman who survived a mass suicide event within a religious cult as a young child returns to the site of the tragedy decades later. Accompanied by a documentary crew, she seeks to uncover the truth about the events that destroyed her community. During their investigation at the compound, the group encounters something far more frightening than the history they intended to document.
The horror film was directed by Phil Joanou, following his previous work on titles such as Gridiron Gang and The Punisher: Dirty Laundry. The movie was produced by Jason Blum and Robert Ben Garant, the latter of whom also wrote the screenplay. The cast features Lily Rabe as Sarah Hope and Jessica Alba as Maggie Price, alongside Thomas Jane, Shannon Woodward, Aleksa Palladino, and Reid Scott.
Produced by Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and Third Baptist Holding Corp, the film was made with a budget of 4 million USD. Since its release on April 21, 2016, the movie has received a mixed reception from viewers, holding a rating of 4.9/10 on TMDB based on 292 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- The role of Sarah was intended solely for Lily Rabe. After seeing her work on projects such as “American Horror Story” (2011) and “Whispers” (2015), director Phil Joanou couldn't envision anyone else in the role.
- The idea for the film was inspired by the mass suicide of cult members in Jonestown, in which over 900 people perished.
