The Tailor of Panama
Short description
A British intelligence officer is sent to Panama following a scandal involving an ambassador's mistress. His objective is to determine the Panamanian president's plans for the canal. To gather information, the spy targets a prominent local tailor who possesses a mysterious past and maintains close ties with the city's political and criminal elite. The tailor, whose wife works for the president, is coerced into acting as an informant. In an attempt to protect his lifestyle, the tailor begins inventing a political conspiracy that eventually draws the interest of foreign intelligence agencies and spirals beyond his control.
Directed by John Boorman, this drama and thriller is the tenth film in his career, following the 1998 production The General. The movie was written by Andrew Davies, John Boorman, and John le Carré. The main cast features Pierce Brosnan, Geoffrey Rush, Jamie Lee Curtis, Leonor Varela, Brendan Gleeson, and Harold Pinter. Produced by Columbia Pictures and Merlin Films, the project had a budget of 21 million USD and earned 28 million USD at the worldwide box office. The film holds a rating of 6.1/10 on IMDb from 30,716 votes and 6/10 on TMDB based on 569 votes. Critics gave the film a higher rating of 6.8/10 across 119 reviews compared to the general audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Exterior shots of the houses where the characters of Geoffrey Rush, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Pierce Brosnan lived were filmed in Panama, while all interior scenes were shot on sets at Ardmore Studios in Ireland. The Pentagon command center with its many state-of-the-art computers was also created in Ireland.
- Geoffrey Rush doesn't drive, so in all scenes where his character is driving, the car is either towed or a stunt double is used.
- The film showcases some of Panama's landmarks – the presidential palace, one of the three main locks of the Panama Canal, the administrator's house, and the Panama Canal control center (the latter being a restricted area, so filming there was kept to a minimum).
- The film is based on the novel of the same name (1996) by John le Carré.
- Upon returning from Panama, the film crew continued shooting at the Ardmore Studios soundstages near Dublin, Ireland.
