Shopgirl
Short description
Shopgirl follows Mirabelle, a young woman working the glove counter of an upscale Beverly Hills department store. She aspires to be an artist but finds little satisfaction or recognition in her job, and her life is further complicated by two very different men: Jeremy, an unambitious musician closer to her own age, and Ray Porter, a wealthy, divorced man in his fifties who enters her life as a customer. Though Ray offers attention and generosity, he keeps his distance from genuine commitment, and Mirabelle must eventually decide what she wants for herself.
The film was directed by Anand Tucker and marks the first feature in the chronological list of his directorial work, preceding And When Did You Last See Your Father?, Red Riding: The Year of Our Lord 1983, Leap Year and The Critic. Steve Martin wrote the screenplay, produced the film and plays Ray Porter; the cast also includes Claire Danes as Mirabelle, Jason Schwartzman as Jeremy, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, Sam Bottoms and Frances Conroy, with 35 credited performers and 101 credited crew members overall.
Shopgirl was released in October 2005 and runs 104 minutes. Made for a budget of about 10 million dollars, it earned roughly 12 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds a 5.8 rating from 287 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.3 from 155 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- During the bedroom scene with Mirabelle, when a cat jumps onto the bed and begins to observe her and Jeremy, two cats were actually used for filming. As director Anand Tucker later explained, one cat would jump up but wouldn't look at what was happening, while the other patiently watched but refused to jump onto the bed.
- Screenwriter Steve Martin initially believed that Tom Hanks would play the role of Ray, but he eventually concluded that he would be better suited for the part himself.
