A criminal organization known as KAOS has developed a bomb capable of dissolving all clothing, and the world's governments need someone to stop it. Maxwell Smart, the bumbling secret agent 86, is called back from retirement to take on the case, working alongside fellow agents like Agent 34 and Agent 22. The film is a comedy spy caper based on the characters created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, with Don Adams reprising the role he made famous on television.
Clive Donner directed the film, which was released in 1980 and sits between his earlier Luv and his later A Christmas Carol. The screenplay comes from Arne Sultan, Bill Dana and Leonard B. Stern, and Jennings Lang produced it for Universal Pictures. Don Adams leads the cast as Smart, with Sylvia Kristel, Rhonda Fleming, Dana Elcar, Andrea Howard and Pamela Hensley in supporting roles.
Produced on a budget of around 15 million dollars, the film's worldwide box office take was roughly the same figure. Its ratings are modest: on IMDb it holds a 5.1 out of 10 from 3,800 votes, and on TMDB a 5.3 from 91 votes. A film critics' rating of 3.6 out of 10 from 18 reviews places it below both audience scores.
