Short description
Emma Brody is a young musician who has been blind since childhood and regains limited vision after a corneal transplant. Her brain cannot process the new sensory input right away, so she recognizes what she has seen only hours later. One night she hears a disturbance in her building and glimpses a figure in the hallway; the next day a neighbour is found murdered, and Emma becomes both a witness and a possible target. Detective John Hallstrom is sceptical of her fragmentary account, and the killer also takes notice of her.
Michael Apted directed the film, the tenth of nineteen features in his career in chronological order, following Thunderheart and preceding Nell. Dana Stevens wrote the screenplay and David Blocker produced. Madeleine Stowe plays Emma, with Aidan Quinn as Hallstrom, James Remar, Peter Friedman, Bruce A. Young and Laurie Metcalf among a credited cast of fifty-seven.
New Line Cinema released the crime thriller on 1 October 1993, at 106 minutes. Its budget was 11 million US dollars and it took about 17 million worldwide, a modest return. On TMDB it holds 6.1 out of 10 from 205 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 5.7 out of 10 from 27 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Originally, in the script, Emma Brody, played by Madeline Stowe, was a poet, but the actress herself asked to change the script and make her character a musician. She learned to play the violin specifically for the role.
- While preparing for the role, Madeline Stowe studied blindness at the University of California, Los Angeles, while Aidan Quinn and James Remar interned with the Chicago Police Department.
