Short description
10 Rillington Place is a British crime drama set in post-war London. It centres on John Christie, a mild-mannered man living with his wife Ethel in a run-down terraced house. Behind that ordinary front, Christie has been killing women, disposing of their bodies in his garden. When the young and impoverished Timothy and Beryl Evans rent rooms in his house with their baby, Christie's crimes and his manipulation of the vulnerable Timothy set in motion a case that ends in a wrongful conviction.
Richard Fleischer directed the film, the fourteenth of the twenty-three features he made, following Tora! Tora! Tora! and preceding See No Evil. Clive Exton wrote the screenplay, and Martin Ransohoff and Leslie Linder produced. Richard Attenborough plays Christie, John Hurt plays Timothy Evans, Judy Geeson is Beryl Evans, and Pat Heywood is Ethel Christie, among a credited cast of twenty-four.
The film was released in February 1971 and runs 111 minutes. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.3 out of 10 from 222 votes, indicating a modest but favourable response from those who have logged it.
What's left behind the scenes
- At the end of the film, when Christie is arrested, a policeman leads him away from Putney Bridge (visible in the background). The Putney police station is actually in the opposite direction on Upper Richmond Road. The direction the policeman is heading only leads downstream along the path toward Hammersmith.
- John Christie is wearing a police uniform when Muriel Eady enters the house in the opening scene, but he had long since left the police force by that point. Muriel knew this, as she and Christie met when they both worked in the same office.
- Bernard Lee filmed the role of 'Inspector Jay' (based on the real Chief Inspector Jennings), but all of his scenes were cut from the final version of the film.
- Applying Richard Attenborough's makeup (which mostly consisted of a bald cap) took 3 hours every morning.
- According to John Hurt's DVD commentary, the actual former executioner Albert Pierrepoint served as a technical consultant during the filming of the execution scene. This was the first scene of a Briton being hanged shown in British cinemas at a time when such information was a state secret and all details of the process were classified. This is where Albert Pierrepoint helped; he participated in the project under a pseudonym. Thanks to him, they were able to recreate a heartbreaking scene, maximizing the true horror of how it actually happened.
- The film was shot on the actual Rillington Place, which changed its name to Ruston Close after the infamous murders. Filming took place both directly at 10 Rillington Place and at number 6. The houses on the street were demolished in the late 1970s and later rebuilt by 1977, becoming Bartle Road and St. Andrew's Square.
- When Christy explains the process, he says that natural gas contains carbon oxide and provides the formula CO2 (which is actually carbon dioxide). The correct formula for carbon monoxide is CO. Nevertheless, this line was written to portray him as a self-taught fraud. The character of Christy is simply creating the appearance of being an 'expert'.
- Timothy and Beryl Evans already have a young daughter, Geraldine, when they first move into the apartment, whereas in reality, she was born after they had already lived there for six months.
- The inscription '1949' appears on the screen when the Evans family comes to view the upper floor of 10 Rillington Place, but they actually moved there in 1948.
- The position of the manhole cover constantly changes when the police remove it following Evans' 'confession'.
- In the bar scene where Beryl and Tim agree to an abortion, Tim drinks from a nearly full glass of beer; after a cut, the glass is nearly empty, and then full again.
