Virunga

This documentary focuses on the efforts to protect the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the final natural home of the endangered mountain gorilla. The film follows a group of park rangers and journalists as they risk their lives to defend the area from armed militias, poachers, and corporate interests seeking to exploit the land's oil and mineral resources. This struggle takes place against a backdrop of civil war and systemic corruption.

Written and directed by Orlando von Einsiedel, this was the first of three films he directed, preceding The Lost Children and The Cycle of Love. He also served as a producer on the project alongside Joanna Natasegara. The production was a collaboration between Doc Society, Grain Media, and Violet Films from the United Kingdom and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
