Maurice
Short description
Maurice is a British-American drama set in Edwardian England. It follows Maurice Hall, a young man from a conventional background who, as a student at Cambridge, forms a close attachment to a fellow undergraduate, Clive Durham. What begins as friendship develops into a romance that must be kept hidden, since their feelings are illegal and socially unacceptable at the time. Clive eventually pulls back from the relationship and chooses a conventional marriage, leaving Maurice to struggle with his sexuality and to search for a way to live honestly.
James Ivory directed the film, working from a screenplay he wrote with Kit Hesketh-Harvey, based on E. M. Forster's novel. It was produced by Ismail Merchant and followed A Room with a View in Ivory's filmography, arriving before Howards End and The Remains of the Day. James Wilby plays Maurice, with Hugh Grant as Clive and Rupert Graves as Alec Scudder. Denholm Elliott, Simon Callow and Billie Whitelaw appear in supporting roles.
The film was made for about 3 million dollars and took roughly 2 million dollars at the worldwide box office, a modest return for its budget.
