Two Years Before the Mast

Two Years Before the Mast is a 1946 adventure drama about the brutal conditions of life at sea in the nineteenth century. Charles Stewart, the wealthy and reckless son of a shipping magnate, is forced aboard the Pilgrim, one of his own father's vessels, and finds himself serving as an ordinary sailor. The ship is bound for the treacherous passage around Cape Horn toward California under Captain Francis Thompson, a commander whose harsh discipline extends to flogging. Richard Henry Dana Jr., whose real-life journal of his time as a common seaman inspired the story, is among the crew. As the voyage wears on through storm and hardship, the mistreatment of the men pushes them toward open revolt.

John Farrow directed, working from a screenplay by George Bruce and Seton I. Miller alongside Dana's own account. The film came first among the features in Farrow's career included here, preceding Red, Hot and Blue, Copper Canyon, His Kind of Woman and Hondo. Alan Ladd heads the cast as Stewart, with Brian Donlevy as Dana, William Bendix as the first mate Amazeen, Barry Fitzgerald as Terence O'Feenaghty, Howard Da Silva as Captain Thompson and Esther Fernández as Maria Dominguez. Paramount produced the picture, which runs 98 minutes.
