Punishment Park is a fictional documentary set in a near-present United States where the Vietnam War has intensified and mass protests have spread. With prisons overcrowded, President Nixon declares a state of emergency, and authorities are empowered to detain people deemed a threat to internal security. Rather than accept long prison sentences, a group of antiwar activists and others brought before a desert tribunal choose to spend three days in Punishment Park, a stretch of California desert where they must try to reach an American flag while armed, motorized police units hunt them. The ordeal becomes a test of endurance against heat, thirst, and violence.
Peter Watkins wrote and directed the film, which followed his earlier work and belongs to the same documentary-style approach he used elsewhere. It was produced by Susan Martin for Churchill Films, Françoise Films, and Chartwell, and runs 88 minutes. The cast of 58 includes Patrick Boland, Carmen Argenziano, Kent Foreman, Luke Johnson, Katherine Quittner, and Scott Turner as defendants before the tribunal.
Released in October 1971, the film has held up as a politically charged drama-thriller. On IMDb it holds a 7.7 rating from around 8,300 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.3 from roughly 220 votes, indicating a strong reputation among those who have sought it out despite its limited audience.
