Set in Berlin during the Romantic era, Amour Fou follows the poet Heinrich, who sees love as a way to overcome death. He tries to persuade his cousin Marie to join him in a suicide pact, but she remains skeptical of both his ideas about kindred spirits and his plan. Heinrich then turns to Henriette, the wife of a business acquaintance, who is initially unmoved by the proposal until she learns she is terminally ill. The film is loosely inspired by the suicide of the poet Heinrich von Kleist in 1811.
Jessica Hausner directed and wrote the screenplay, and the film stands as the first in the chronological list of her features, ahead of Little Joe and Club Zero. Christian Friedel plays Heinrich, Sandra Hüller appears as Marie, and Katharina Schüttler, Stephan Grossmann and Hana Sofia Lopes are among the credited cast of 26. Produced across Germany, Austria and Luxembourg, it runs 96 minutes and blends comedy, drama and romance.
Released in 2014, the film received a critics' rating of 7.3/10 from 51 reviews, while audiences on TMDB rate it 6.5/10 from 49 votes, a modest gap suggesting critics responded more favorably than general viewers.
