Short description

Young Jim Hawkins helps his mother run an inn on the English coast, where a frightened old sailor named Billy Bones takes a room and keeps watch for the men pursuing him. When Billy Bones dies and pirates ransack the inn, Jim and his mother escape with a map that marks the hiding place of a fortune. With a local squire and a doctor, Jim joins an expedition aboard the Hispaniola, bound for a distant island. The ship's one-legged cook, Long John Silver, proves to be the leader of a crew of pirates who intend to take the treasure for themselves, leaving Jim and his companions to survive the mutiny.

This 1990 television adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel was directed by Fraser Clarke Heston, who also wrote the screenplay. It was the first feature he directed, followed by Needful Things in 1993 and Alaska in 1996. Charlton Heston plays Long John Silver, with Christian Bale as Jim Hawkins; Oliver Reed, Christopher Lee, Richard Johnson and Julian Glover appear as Billy Bones, Blind Pew, Squire Trelawney and Dr. Livesey. Made for around six million dollars, it runs 131 minutes and received a 7 out of 10 rating on IMDb from roughly 6,600 votes, while TMDB users rate it 6.7 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes, indicating steady viewer approval.

What's left behind the scenes

  • A replica of the historic three-masted schooner "Bounty" (1787) served as the "stand-in" for the schooner "Hispaniola" in the film. The construction of many of the ship’s details does not correspond to the described era – the mid-18th century.
  • A film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Robert Louis Stevenson.
