Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey
Short description
Three pets are left in the care of a friend when their family travels to San Francisco. Chance, an American bulldog, Shadow, a golden retriever, and Sassy, a cat, wait at a ranch far from home. Believing they have been abandoned, the three set out together to find their way back, crossing mountains and desert and relying on one another to survive the journey.
Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey is a 1993 American family adventure film directed by Duwayne Dunham, his first feature, made before Little Giants and Halloweentown. Caroline Thompson and Linda Woolverton wrote the screenplay, and the animals are voiced by Michael J. Fox, Sally Field and Don Ameche, with live-action roles for Kevin Chevalia, Benj Thall and Veronica Lauren among a credited cast of 33. The film runs 84 minutes. Made for a budget of about 24 million dollars, it took roughly 42 million dollars worldwide, a solid return for a family release of its size. Audiences rate it 7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 55,000 votes and 7 out of 10 on TMDB from just over a thousand, while critics give it 6.9 out of 10 from 31 reviews, placing professional and audience responses close together.

- The film contains two references to Arnold Schwarzenegger. In one instance, the dog Chance calls a cougar "Arnold Schwartzenkitty" (from the English "kitty" - kitten), and in another he says "Hasta la vista." This phrase was uttered by Schwarzenegger's character in the science fiction action film "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (James Cameron, 1991).
- The film is a remake of Fletcher Markle's "The Incredible Journey" (1963), which in turn was based on a book by Sheila Burnford. The remake's authors decided to change the names and breeds of the main characters. The young and cheerful American Bulldog Chance was a Labrador Retriever named Quick in the book. The old Golden Retriever Shadow was a Bull Terrier named Dodger. The Himalayan cat Sassy was a Siamese cat named Tao.
