Richard Mason is a successful engineer whose marriage to Kathryn has gone sour, in part because he has fallen for her younger sister, Evelyn. Convinced his wife will never agree to a divorce, he works out an elaborate plan to get rid of her and be free to pursue Evelyn. He pretends that a car accident has left him confined to a wheelchair, then uses that cover to carry out the killing on a remote mountain road, where Kathryn's car goes over the edge. Afterward he finds that Evelyn does not return his feelings and that questions about what really happened will not leave him alone.
The film was directed by Curtis Bernhardt and released by Warner Bros. in 1945, arriving between My Reputation and Possessed in his run of features and following Juke Girl. Humphrey Bogart plays Richard, with Alexis Smith as Evelyn, Sydney Greenstreet as Mark Hamilton, Rose Hobart as Kathryn and Charles Drake and Grant Mitchell in supporting roles. Dwight Taylor and Arthur T. Horman wrote the screenplay, and William Jacobs produced.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.2 from roughly 5,400 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from a much smaller group of 85 votes. It took in about 4 million dollars worldwide.
