Oasis is a South Korean drama about Hong Jong-du, a man just out of prison after serving time for a drunk-driving accident that killed a man. He was jailed in place of his older brother, the actual driver, who fled the scene. After his release, Jong-du seeks out the family of the victim and meets Han Gong-ju, the dead man's adult daughter, who has cerebral palsy and lives largely alone in a shabby apartment after her brother moves away. The two form an unlikely bond, and their relationship meets strong opposition from both families.
Lee Chang-dong directed and wrote the film, his third feature after Green Fish and Peppermint Candy and before Secret Sunshine, Poetry, Burning and Possible Love. Sul Kyung-gu plays Jong-du and Moon So-ri plays Gong-ju, with Ahn Nae-sang, Ryoo Seung-wan, Son Byung-ho and Kim Jin-goo in supporting roles.
Released in August 2002, the film is a modest production by Korean industry standards. It earned about 7 million US dollars worldwide, a figure that understates its renown; it circulated widely on the festival circuit and is often cited among the notable Korean films of its era. It holds a rating of 7.8 on IMDb from around 12,000 votes and 7.7 on TMDB from roughly 290 votes, with critics averaging 7.7 across 30 reviews.
