Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone
Short description
When a passenger spacecraft crashes on a distant world, three women survive by escaping in a shuttle that lands on Terra 11, a planet quarantined after a plague swept through its population. A salvage pilot named Wolff picks up word of the disaster and the reward offered for the survivors, and he sets out for the forbidden zone, where the tyrannical OverDog holds the women captive. On the surface Wolff meets Nikki, the lone survivor of an earlier medical expedition, and together they move against OverDog's territory.
Lamont Johnson directed the film, which followed his 1976 feature Lipstick in his filmography. Peter Strauss plays Wolff, with Molly Ringwald as Nikki, Ernie Hudson as Washington and Michael Ironside as OverDog. The screenplay is credited to David Preston, Edith Rey and Len Blum, and Columbia Pictures released the film in May 1983.
Made for about 15 million dollars, the film returned roughly 16 million worldwide, a modest result against its cost. On TMDB it holds a 5.4 rating from 143 votes, indicating a lukewarm response from viewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- The ground equipment used in the film was rented from the creators of the film "Brainstorm" (1983), which was being filmed at the same time.
- Filming took about three months – from November 10, 1982, to January 29, 1983 – and was carried out in the desert of Utah, as well as in Vancouver.
- The film was shot for cinemas with special stereoscopic screens, so-called "3-D effects" – a widespread craze of the early 80s.
