In late nineteenth-century France, Countess Louise, the wife of a wealthy general, sells a pair of earrings her husband gave her in order to settle debts she has kept hidden from him, then tells him she has lost them. The jeweller tells the general what really happened, and the earrings begin passing from one owner to another, eventually reaching an Italian baron, Fabrizio Donati. When Donati meets Louise in Paris and falls in love with her, he gives her the same earrings as a gift, and the deception she attempts about their reappearance sets the general on a collision course with his wife's admirer. The film is based on a novel by Louise de Vilmorin.

Max Ophüls directed, working on the screenplay with Marcel Achard and Annette Wademant, with Ralph Baum producing. It came after Le Plaisir in Ophüls's filmography and before Lola Montès, and it was shot as an Italian-French co-production. Danielle Darrieux plays Louise opposite Charles Boyer as her husband, while Vittorio De Sica, better known as a director, takes the part of Donati; the credited cast runs to thirty-four performers, among them Jean Debucourt, Jean Galland and Mireille Perrey.

On IMDb the film holds 7.9 out of 10 from around 12,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.5 out of 10 from a much smaller electorate of 262. A critics' rating of 9 out of 10 from 35 reviews places it clearly above both audience scores.
