Come Undone

Come Undone is a French-Belgian drama about Mathieu, an eighteen-year-old spending the summer with his mother and sister at a seaside village. The household is shadowed by grief: Mathieu's mother has been left distraught by the death of her youngest child, and Annick looks after her day to day. On the beach, Mathieu meets Cédric, a boy his own age, and what begins as a holiday acquaintance gradually deepens into an intense first love. The outgoing Cédric moves toward the future easily, while the introspective Mathieu struggles with himself, with family difficulties and with his own uncertainty, and the relationship carries consequences for the life he has known.

The film is the feature debut of director Sébastien Lifshitz, who wrote the screenplay with Stéphane Bouquet. It precedes his later works The Crossing, Wild Side, Madame Hofmann and A Very Good Boy. Jérémie Elkaïm plays Mathieu and Stéphane Rideau plays Cédric, with Dominique Reymond as Mathieu's mother and Marie Matheron as Annick, alongside Laetitia Legrix and Nils Ohlund.

Released in 2000 and running 94 minutes, the film drew modest audiences and mixed-to-positive notice: it holds 6.4 out of 10 from 33 critics' reviews, with audience ratings of 6.5 on IMDb from 63 votes and 6.4 on TMDB from 89 votes, figures that suggest a small viewership and a reception roughly in line across critics and viewers.
