Short description

S.O.B. is a Hollywood satire about Felix Farmer, a successful movie producer whose latest picture flops badly. With his career and marriage in trouble, he buys the film back and reworks it, adding explicit material and persuading its wholesome star, Sally Miles, to appear topless, in the hope of turning the failure into a hit. The scheme runs into resistance from studio executives and others around him.

Blake Edwards directed and wrote the film, and produced it with Tony Adams. It was his sixteenth film as director in chronological order, coming after 10 and before Victor/Victoria. Julie Andrews plays Sally Miles, with William Holden as Tim Culley, Marisa Berenson as Mavis, Larry Hagman as Dick Benson, Robert Loggia as Herb Maskowitz and Stuart Margolin as Gary Murdock among a credited cast of thirty-four. The film, a Paramount and Lorimar production, was released in July 1981 and runs 121 minutes. Its worldwide box office of about 15 million dollars was modest for a studio comedy of that period.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 6,900 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6 out of 10 from just over a hundred votes. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 28 reviews is higher than either audience figure, suggesting reviewers responded to the film more warmly than general viewers did.

What's left behind the scenes

  • To a certain extent, the film is based on the director, writer, and producer Blake Edwards' creation of the romantic comedy 'Dear Lily' (1970) and the Western 'Wild Rovers' (1971).
  • According to Robert Vaughn, his character (he played David Blackman) was based on the legendary producer Robert Evans.
  • It was intended that Orion Pictures would sponsor both this film and another Blake Edwards project titled 'The Ferret,' in which Edwards would again cast Dudley Moore (who had previously starred for Edwards in the 1979 romantic comedy '10'). As a result of a conflict arising over the budget for 'The Ferret,' Orion Pictures withdrew from both projects, and this film passed to Lorimar.
  • Julie Andrews played Sally Miles, a character who in many ways resembles the actress herself. Like Andrews, Miles appeared in many family and children's movies, becoming firmly associated with such films in the eyes of the audience. Much like Andrews, Miles desperately wanted to break free from her usual image.
  • The last theatrical release featuring William Holden, who played Tim Callighan. The actor passed away shortly after filming was completed.
  • The plot, in which the characters played by Robert Preston, William Holden, and Robert Webber steal the corpse of a character played by Richard Mulligan, is based on a true story. Director Raoul Walsh once bribed a funeral home owner to "borrow" the body of the deceased actor John Barrymore. He placed the corpse in a chair so that a drunken Errol Flynn (a Hollywood actor of Australian origin and a sex symbol of the 1930s and 40s) would stumble upon it.
