Naked Lunch

Naked Lunch follows Bill Lee, an exterminator in 1950s New York who has become dependent on the insecticide powder he uses on the job. After he accidentally shoots his wife, he flees to a surreal place called Interzone, a shifting city where he finds himself working for a mysterious organization. His typewriter transforms into a giant insect that orders him to write reports about his experiences, drawing him deeper into a hallucinatory existence in which reality and delusion are hard to separate. The film is based on William S. Burroughs's novel and blends elements of the author's life with its material.

David Cronenberg wrote and directed the film, the tenth of the twenty-two features he has directed, following Dead Ringers and preceding M. Butterfly. Peter Weller plays Bill Lee, with Judy Davis as Joan Frost, Ian Holm as Tom Frost, Julian Sands as Yves Cloquet and Roy Scheider as Dr. Benway, among a credited cast of twenty-three. Jeremy Thomas produced.

Made for a budget of 16 million US dollars, the film earned about 3 million at the worldwide box office. It holds a rating of 6.9 out of 10 on IMDb from 61,000 votes and 7 out of 10 on TMDB from 1,259 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 40 reviews places critical and audience responses fairly close together.
