Shivers

A suburban high-rise becomes the setting for an outbreak in David Cronenberg's second feature. When a scientist's biological experiment gets out of control, a parasite spreads through the residents of the building, turning those infected into carriers of a compulsion that mixes sexual aggression with violence. A doctor and his colleagues try to understand what is happening inside the complex as the infection moves from tenant to tenant.

Cronenberg wrote the screenplay, and Ivan Reitman produced. The cast includes Paul Hampton, Joe Silver, Lynn Lowry, Allan Kolman, Susan Petrie and Barbara Steele, among a credited ensemble of thirty-two performers. The film followed Cronenberg's Crimes of the Future in 1970 and preceded Rabid in 1977, the second of the twenty-two features he has directed.

Released in 1975, Shivers runs 88 minutes and was produced in Canada by the Canadian Film Development Corporation, Cinépix Film Properties and DAL Productions. It took about one million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from roughly 26,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 from a much smaller base of 737 votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 from 27 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.
