Black Moon takes place during a war between men and women, a conflict that has spread across the roads and countryside. A teenage girl named Lily escapes an execution and flees into the woods, where she follows a unicorn to a secluded house. There she finds an unusual household: a brother and sister, a group of children, and an elderly woman who never leaves her bed but keeps in touch with the outside world through a radio. The film follows Lily as she settles into this strange refuge and encounters its rituals.
Louis Malle wrote and directed the film, the eighth of the thirteen he directed in chronological order, arriving between Lacombe, Lucien (1974) and Pretty Baby (1978). Cathryn Harrison plays Lily, with Therese Giehse as the old woman, Alexandra Stewart as the sister and Joe Dallesandro as the brother. The film was produced in France and Germany and runs just over an hour and a half.
Black Moon holds a rating of 6.1 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 6,600 votes, and 6 out of 10 on TMDB from 169 votes. A critics' rating of 5.6 out of 10 from 12 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores. The film is a fantasy with elements of horror, mystery and science fiction.
