Albert Hockenberry arrives in Washington, D.C. hoping to build a taxi business of his own. Instead he takes work with Harold, an aging hippie whose small cab company is barely staying afloat, and tries to stir some ambition in a crew of drivers who mostly dream of other careers. The drivers' loyalties are tested when Albert is kidnapped and his colleagues must decide what they owe him and his plans.
Joel Schumacher directed and co-wrote the film with Topper Carew, who produced it. It was Schumacher's first feature as director, and he followed it with St. Elmo's Fire two years later. Mr. T plays the driver Samson, with Max Gail as Harold, Adam Baldwin as Albert, and Gary Busey, Bill Maher and Peter Paul among a credited cast of twenty-three.
Universal Pictures and RKO Pictures released the film in December 1983. Made for about eight million dollars, it returned roughly sixteen million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.6 from around 5,600 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.2 from about a hundred votes. A critics' score of 4.2 from eleven reviews places it below both audience results.
