Short description

A multi-layered satire of race relations in America. Live-action sequences of a prison break bracket the animated tale of Brother Rabbit, Brother Bear, and Preacher Fox, who rise to the top of the crime ranks in Harlem by going up against a con-man, a racist cop, and the Mafia.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Ralph Bakshi persuaded producer Albert S. Ruddy to create this animated film. He promised to make a remake of the animated musical "Song of the South" (Harvey Foster and Wilfred Jackson, 1946). The cartoon mocks the Uncle Remus tales around which the plot of "Song of the South" is built.
  • The upcoming release of the animated film sparked fierce protests from the Congress of Racial Equality, an American organization promoting the improvement of interracial relations and the end of racial discrimination. The organization was led by Al Sharpton. One of the protest events disrupted the film's premiere, and Ben Gage was hired to redub some of Barry White's lines (who voiced the main character for Bakshi) to remove "racist undertones and vulgarities."
  • While Martin Scorsese was filming the crime drama 'Taxi Driver' (1976) near Times Square, he managed to capture footage of audiences rushing out of a cinema showing 'Black Girl' because someone had thrown a smoke bomb into the theater. Scorsese sent these clips to Bakshi, who commented that he didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
