A doctor arrives in a small European village to perform an autopsy on a young woman whose death has been ruled a suicide. The locals resent his presence, believing a curse has hung over them since the death of a baroness's young daughter, and that anyone who sees the girl's ghost is marked for death. Working with a police inspector, the doctor pursues his investigation toward the Villa Graps, refusing at first to accept the superstition around him.
Mario Bava directed the film, his sixth feature, arriving between Planet of the Vampires and Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs. He shares screenplay credit with Roberto Natale and Romano Migliorini, and the cast is led by Giacomo Rossi Stuart as Dr. Paul Eswai, Erika Blanc as Monica Schuftan, Piero Lulli as Inspector Kruger, Fabienne Dali as Ruth, Luciano Catenacci as Karl, and Giovanna Galletti as Baroness Graps. Luciano Catenacci and Nando Pisani produced for FUL Films.
The film runs 83 minutes and was released in July 1966. On IMDb it holds a 6.9 rating from around 8,500 votes, and on TMDB a 6.9 from roughly 270 votes. A critics' rating of 6.4 from 16 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores, though all three sit in similar territory, indicating a well-regarded but not universally praised entry in Bava's filmography.
