Onibaba

Set in fourteenth-century Japan, Onibaba follows two women living in a remote marshland of tall reeds. With the younger woman's husband away at war, she and her mother-in-law survive by ambushing exhausted samurai who wander into the swamp, killing them and selling what they carry to a local trader. When news arrives that the husband has died in battle, the younger woman begins a relationship with a neighbor, Hachi, who has returned from the fighting. The older woman opposes the affair, and her attempts to end it lead her to a frightening mask taken from a dead warrior.

Kaneto Shindō directed and wrote the film, which sits between The Naked Island and Edo Porn in his filmography. Nobuko Otowa and Jitsuko Yoshimura play the two women, with Kei Satō as Hachi and Jūkichi Uno as the samurai. The production companies included Kindai Eiga Kyokai, and the film runs 105 minutes.
