Twin brothers Todd and Terry appear to be ordinary boys, but a killing at a drive-in cinema during a Thanksgiving holiday outing changes both their lives. One brother commits the murder and shifts the blame onto the other, who is sent to a psychiatric institution. Ten years later, Todd escapes and sets out to prove he was not responsible for what happened. At the same time, new killings begin in the area, and because Todd is now a fugitive, suspicion falls on him again.
John Grissmer directed the film from a screenplay by Bruce Rubin, with Marianne Kanter producing. Mark Soper plays both brothers, and Louise Lasser appears as their mother, Maddy, alongside Marianne Kanter as Dr. Berman, Julie Gordon, Jayne Bentzen and William Fuller in supporting roles. The film runs 79 minutes and belongs to the horror and thriller genres.
Released in March 1987, Nightmare at Shadow Woods drew modest audience scores: it holds a rating of 5.8 out of 10 on IMDb from around 6,500 votes, and a matching 5.8 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller number of votes. The agreement between the two audiences suggests a film regarded as a minor entry in the slasher cycle of its era rather than a widely celebrated one.
