Set in New Mexico in the late nineteenth century, The Furies centres on T. C. Jeffords, a self-made cattle baron who rules his vast ranch with an iron hand. He expects his headstrong daughter Vance to inherit the property, but their already combative relationship deteriorates when he brings home Flo Burnett, a woman from the city he intends to marry. Flo works to push Vance aside, and the household splits into open conflict. Jeffords is also determined to drive Mexican settlers off land he considers his own, a campaign that puts him at odds with his daughter, who has a lifelong friendship with Juan Herrera, the eldest son of one of those families.
Anthony Mann directed the film, the eighth of the twenty features credited to him in chronological order, following Devil's Doorway and preceding Bend of the River. Charles Schnee wrote the screenplay, and Hal B. Wallis produced for Paramount. Barbara Stanwyck plays Vance, with Walter Huston as her father, Judith Anderson as Flo, Wendell Corey as the banker Rip Darrow, and Gilbert Roland as Juan Herrera. The picture runs 109 minutes.
Audience response has been durable: on IMDb it holds 7.2 from roughly 4,300 votes, and on TMDB 7.1 from about 85 votes. Those figures point to a well-regarded western whose reputation rests on the Stanwyck and Huston performances and on Mann's direction.
