White Hunter, Black Heart

Clint Eastwood plays John Wilson, a headstrong American film director who travels to Africa to prepare a major production. Instead of concentrating on the shoot, he repeatedly slips away to hunt big game, frustrating his cast and crew, and grows fixated on killing a particular elephant. The screenplay, written by James Bridges, Burt Kennedy and Peter Viertel, draws on Viertel's experiences and is a fictionalized account of the making of The African Queen.

The film was directed by Eastwood and produced by him through Malpaso Productions with Warner Bros. Pictures and Rastar Productions. It is the fifteenth of the forty features he has directed, arriving between The Rookie and Unforgiven. Jeff Fahey plays Wilson's friend and screenwriter Pete Verrill, with George Dzundza, Alun Armstrong, Mel Martin and Clive Mantle among the credited cast of twenty-two. The production cost about 24 million US dollars and returned roughly 2 million worldwide.

Released in May 1990, the film runs 112 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.5 from over thirteen thousand votes, and on TMDB 6.4 from several hundred. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from thirty-six reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
