Eating Raoul

Paul and Mary Bland are a married couple in Los Angeles with a modest income and a large ambition: to open their own restaurant. Mary works as a nurse, while Paul has just lost his job at a wine shop, putting their goal further out of reach. Their apartment building is also home to a group of swingers whose behavior offends the couple's conservative sensibilities, and the friction between the two households becomes a recurring problem.

When a drunk intruder forces his way into their apartment and comes on to Mary, Paul kills him and finds a substantial amount of cash on the body. The couple begins placing advertisements designed to draw people to their home, where they are robbed and killed, with the proceeds going toward the restaurant they have always wanted. Their scheme brings them into contact with Raoul Mendoza, and it eventually runs into trouble from a burglar who witnesses what they are doing and tries to blackmail them.

Paul Bartel directed and co-wrote the film with Richard Blackburn, and he and Mary Woronov star as the Blands. It followed Bartel's earlier features Death Race 2000 and Cannonball. Robert Beltran plays Raoul, with Susan Saiger, Richard Paul and John Shearin in supporting roles. The film rates 6.8/10 on IMDb from roughly 9,900 votes, 6.5/10 on TMDB and 6.7/10 from 20 critics' reviews.
