Rules Don't Apply

Set in Hollywood in 1958, Rules Don't Apply centres on Marla Mabrey, a young Baptist from a small midwestern town who arrives in Los Angeles after the billionaire Howard Hughes signs her to a contract. Frank Forbes, a religious young man only weeks into his job, is the driver sent to collect her, and the two are drawn to each other almost at once. That attraction runs against Hughes's strictest rule: his employees are forbidden from becoming involved with the actresses he has under contract. Their religious convictions are tested at the same time, while the unpredictable tycoon's behaviour shapes the lives of everyone around him.

Warren Beatty directed, wrote and produced the film, and also plays Hughes. It is the fifth feature he directed, following Heaven Can Wait, Reds, Dick Tracy and Bulworth, and it arrives eighteen years after the previous one. Lily Collins and Alden Ehrenreich lead the cast, with Matthew Broderick, Annette Bening and Alec Baldwin in supporting roles; 65 cast members and 81 crew are credited.

The production had a budget of 25 million USD and returned 4 million USD worldwide, a small fraction of its cost. On IMDb it holds 5.7/10 from 11,535 votes, on TMDB 5.8/10 from 511 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 5.8/10 from 182 reviews.
