Dana Barrow moves with her husband David and their young son Lucas into a rural house, hoping the change will help repair their strained marriage. While working on the property, Dana finds a small door in the attic that does not appear on any plan of the house. What lies behind it is tied to the building's past, and its discovery sets off strange occurrences that unsettle the family and push Dana's state of mind toward the edge, blurring the line between what is real and what she fears she is imagining.
The Disappointments Room was directed by D. J. Caruso, his seventh feature, arriving between I Am Number Four and xXx: Return of Xander Cage. Caruso wrote the screenplay with Wentworth Miller. Kate Beckinsale leads as Dana, with Mel Raido as David, Duncan Joiner as Lucas, and supporting turns from Lucas Till, Gerald McRaney and Michaela Conlin. The film was produced by Relativity Media on a budget of about 15 million dollars and played in theaters from September 9, 2016, running 92 minutes.
Its reception was weak on both counts: it grossed roughly six million dollars worldwide against its budget, and audiences rated it 4 out of 10 on IMDb from around 11,000 votes, with a similar 4.5 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 484 votes.
