Short description

Danger: Diabolik follows a master thief who carries out one audacious robbery after another, slipping past the authorities each time. Working alongside his lover and accomplice Eva Kant, he targets cash and jewels while Inspector Ginko leads the manhunt against him. The thief's success draws unwanted attention from rival criminals as well, in particular the gang boss Ralph Valmont, and the pressure from both sides of the law steadily closes around the pair.

Mario Bava directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Brian Degas and Tudor Gates, working from the Italian comic characters created by Angela and Luciana Giussani. It was produced by Dino De Laurentiis and came after a run of Bava's earlier features, among them Black Sunday, Blood and Black Lace and Planet of the Vampires. John Phillip Law plays Diabolik, with Marisa Mell as Eva Kant, Michel Piccoli as Ginko and Adolfo Celi as Valmont; around fifty performers are credited.

The film runs 104 minutes and blends action, crime, thriller and comedy across Italian and French production. On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.3 from 23 critics' reviews, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.3, drawn from 262 user votes, indicating a modest but consistent reception across professional and general audiences.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In American trailers for the film, Eva's white 'Jaguar' and Eva herself in a white long-sleeved dress are briefly shown, which has nothing to do with the sleeveless red dress shown in the film. These are the only surviving shots of Catherine Deneuve as Eva.
  • Initially, Seth Holt was the director of the film, but producer Dino De Laurentiis disliked his style, and Mario Bava became the director.
