Arsène Lupin III, the world's most wanted thief, appears to have been executed. Inspector Zenigata of Interpol refuses to accept that his longtime quarry is gone, and when the two cross paths again, Lupin is very much alive. His attention turns to an ancient stone said to grant eternal life, a prize that also interests Fujiko Mine and a wealthy recluse named Mamo. What begins as a pursuit of a legendary artifact draws Lupin, Jigen and Goemon toward Mamo's hidden base and a scheme with consequences far beyond a single treasure.
Soji Yoshikawa directed this 1978 anime feature, the second theatrical film in the Lupin the Third series, from a screenplay he wrote with Atsushi Yamatoya. Yasuo Yamada voices Lupin, with Kiyoshi Kobayashi as Jigen, Eiko Masuyama as Fujiko, Makio Inoue as Goemon, Gorō Naya as Zenigata and Kō Nishimura as Mamo. It was Yoshikawa's first directed film; his only other listed directing credit comes three decades later, in 2009.
The film holds a 6.9 rating on IMDb from roughly 1,900 votes and a 7 on TMDB from about 123 votes, indicating a modest but settled following rather than broad acclaim. Its reported budget and worldwide box office figures place it as a costly production relative to its returns.
