Chances Are

Chances Are is a romantic comedy with a supernatural twist. Louie Jeffries, a young Washington lawyer, is happily married to Corinne, but on the couple's first wedding anniversary he is struck by a car and killed. His spirit returns to Earth in the body of a newborn, and he grows up as Alex Finch, with no memory of his former life. Roughly two decades later, Alex meets Corinne's daughter, Miranda, and is drawn to her, while the memories of who he once was begin to resurface. The situation is complicated by his old friend Philip Train, who has long been close to the family, and by Alex's growing feelings for a young woman who turns out to be his own daughter, even as his attachment to Corinne pulls him back toward the past.

Emile Ardolino directed the film, which followed his 1987 hit Dirty Dancing and preceded 3 Men and a Little Lady and Sister Act. Perry Howze and Randy Howze wrote the screenplay, and Mike Lobell produced. The cast includes Cybill Shepherd, Robert Downey Jr., Ryan O'Neal, Mary Stuart Masterson, Christopher McDonald and Josef Sommer.

Released by TriStar Pictures in March 1989, the film runs 108 minutes. Made for about 16 million dollars, it took in roughly the same amount worldwide, so it did not turn a profit. On IMDb it holds 6.5 from over thirteen thousand votes, while on TMDB it has 6.6 from a few hundred. A critics' rating of 5.7 from thirty-two reviews places it below both audience scores.
