Four Flies on Grey Velvet

Roberto Tobias is a drummer in a rock band whose life is upended by strange phone calls and a stranger who keeps appearing wherever he goes. One night he confronts the man, and during the struggle the stranger is fatally stabbed. Roberto flees, but the next day he receives an envelope containing photographs of the killing. The unknown person behind the pictures does not ask for money; instead, people close to Roberto begin to die, and the evidence points to him. With the help of his wife Nina and an eccentric circle of acquaintances, he turns to a private detective to find out who is behind the campaign against him.

The film is Dario Argento's second as director, following The Bird with the Crystal Plumage the previous year and preceding The Cat o' Nine Tails. Argento also wrote the screenplay, and Salvatore Argento produced. Michael Brandon leads the cast as Roberto, with Mimsy Farmer as Nina and Jean-Pierre Marielle as the detective Gianni Arrosio. Produced in Italy and France, it runs 104 minutes and belongs to the crime, horror, mystery and thriller genres.

Its reputation rests on a mid-range reception: on IMDb it holds 6.5/10 from around 11,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5/10 from roughly 439 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8/10 from nine reviews places it slightly above those audience scores, though all three sit in similar territory.
