Short description
Will and his girlfriend Kira attend a dinner party hosted by his ex-wife Eden and her new husband David, held at the house Will and Eden once shared. Years earlier, the couple lost their son, and Eden left the city without warning. Now she has returned, remarried and seemingly changed, hoping to reconnect with the people she left behind. As the evening goes on, Will becomes convinced that his hosts and their friends are hiding something and may be preparing a plan for their guests. The film shifts between the tensions of the gathering and Will's growing uncertainty about what is real.
Karyn Kusama directed the film from a screenplay by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, who also produced alongside Martha Griffin. It is her fourth feature, following Girlfight, Æon Flux and Jennifer's Body. Logan Marshall-Green plays Will, with Tammy Blanchard as Eden, Emayatzy Corinealdi as Kira, Michiel Huisman as David, John Carroll Lynch as Pruitt and Lindsay Burdge as Sadie. Made for about 1 million dollars, it is a low-budget production from XYZ Films, Gamechanger Films and Lege Artis.
The film drew stronger notices from critics, whose rating stands at 7.6/10 from 117 reviews, than from general audiences, where it holds 6.6/10 on IMDb from around 129,000 votes and 6.4/10 on TMDB from a few thousand ratings.
What's left behind the scenes
- Creative control over the making of the independent film was in the hands of director Karin Kusam and screenwriters Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi. Major studios did not participate in the project's creation.
- In the scene where Will remembers his son's room (played by Aiden Lavakamp), toys and letter blocks are scattered on the floor. They appear to be scattered randomly at first glance, but Logan Marshall-Green, who played Will, later confessed that he deliberately left an "Easter egg" in the scene. The letter blocks can be arranged to spell "KUSAMA," the director's last name.
- At the party, wine is poured into glasses directly from the bottle, and a decanter is only used for the last pour. This nuance suggests to the audience and the main character that the party has become dangerous.
