Macon Leary writes travel guides for business travellers who want to avoid anything unfamiliar. After his son dies, he and his wife Sarah drift apart, and she leaves him. Macon moves into the family home and settles into a routine with his siblings, until a trip forces him to board his dog with Muriel Pritchett, an outgoing dog trainer whose life looks nothing like his. Her company slowly draws him back into the world, even as Sarah begins to suggest the marriage might be saved, leaving Macon to work out what he wants.
The Accidental Tourist was released in December 1988 and runs 121 minutes. Lawrence Kasdan directed and wrote the screenplay with Frank Galati, and produced it with Charles Okun and Michael Grillo. It is the fourth film Kasdan directed, following Body Heat, The Big Chill and Silverado. William Hurt plays Macon, Kathleen Turner plays Sarah, and Geena Davis plays Muriel; Amy Wright, David Ogden Stiers and Ed Begley Jr. appear as Macon's siblings. Twenty-nine performers are credited in all.
The film earned about 33 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 7.2 out of 10 from 34 reviews, while on TMDB its audience rating is 6.3 out of 10 from 265 votes, so professional reviewers rated it more warmly than the public did.
