Short description

Adonis Johnson never knew his father, heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born. Despite a comfortable upbringing and a secure career path, Adonis feels the pull of boxing and travels to Philadelphia, where his father once fought Rocky Balboa. He tracks Rocky down and asks the former champion to train him. Rocky has long since left the sport behind and initially refuses, but he recognizes in the young man the same drive that once belonged to Apollo, his old rival turned closest friend, and eventually agrees to take him on. Rocky is also facing a personal fight of his own.

Creed is a 2015 American sports drama directed by Ryan Coogler, who wrote the screenplay with Aaron Covington. It is the second film Coogler directed, following Fruitvale Station in 2013. Michael B. Jordan plays Adonis, with Sylvester Stallone returning as Rocky Balboa; Tessa Thompson, Phlylicia Rashad, Andre Ward and Tony Bellew appear in supporting roles, and Stallone also produced alongside Irwin Winkler and William Chartoff.

Made for a budget of 35 million dollars, the film took about 174 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its cost. Audiences responded well: it holds a 7.6 rating on IMDb from over 333,000 votes and a 7.4 on TMDB. Critics were more enthusiastic still, giving it 8 out of 10 across 313 reviews.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Sylvester Stallone stated that he is proud to be involved in a project that has not lost its popularity for several decades. Stallone said: "It's amazing that this character and what happens to him remain relevant even without any elaborate special effects, car chases, explosions, which are abundant in my other films, without shooting, swearing, and sex... I find this simply amazing – a generation that wasn't even born when we filmed the third "Rocky" (not to mention the first) still finds this character interesting, allowing my hero to reach a new level."
  • Director Ryan Coogler wanted to preserve the storyline of the father-son relationship in this film. "Boxing is a sport where the support of another person is extremely important," he later said. "There is a very close connection between a boxer and his coach. We know this from the example of Tyson and Cus D'Amato. We've seen it in the relationship between Rocky and Mickey. It's a special connection, and I wanted to preserve it in the new film."
  • It was not easy for Sylvester Stallone to portray the aging Rocky Balboa. “It’s hard to put into words how you feel when you sit down in front of the makeup artist as one person, and after an hour and a half you get up from it as an infirm old man,” said the 69-year-old actor. “But after all, we all age every day. I somehow particularly acutely felt that time goes by...”
  • To maintain tradition, Sylvester Stallone (Rocky Balboa) insisted that Michael B. Jordan (Adonis Creed) wear the same American flag-colored trunks that Apollo Creed wore in “Rocky” (1976), and that Rocky himself wore in “Rocky III” (1982) and “Rocky IV” (1985).
  • Michael B. Jordan is very grateful to Sylvester Stallone for his moral support. “Sly really helped me. He advised me not to go out of my way to uphold the high reputation of the other 'Rocky' films, but just to be myself,” the actor said.
  • Initially, Sylvester Stallone did not want to make another film about Rocky Balboa. “I flatly refused,” the Oscar nominee recalled about when Ryan Coogler first approached him with the idea. “The previous film was difficult for me. I was so glad that the whole story was over that I thought at the time, ‘Okay, we’re done. There’s no need to go back to this.’ In general, I turned Coogler down.” The director’s persistence eventually prevailed.
  • This is the second film after "Rambo" in which Sylvester Stallone and Graham McTavish have starred together.
  • This is the first film in the 'Rocky' series distributed by Warner Bros.
  • Tessa Thompson plays the role of Adonis's girlfriend, a singer-songwriter. Thompson and composer Ludwig Göransson collaborated on writing nine songs for the film.
  • Michael B. Jordan, who played the main role, was born in 1987, two years after the "death" of Apollo Creed.
  • Before filming "Creed: Legacy of Rocky", actor Michael B. Jordan and screenwriter and director Ryan Coogler had previously collaborated on the biographical drama "Fruitvale Station" (2013).
  • Some scenes of the film were shot in the stands during a football match between Everton and West Bromwich Albion, which was broadcast as part of "Monday Night Football." A big fan of Everton, Sylvester Stallone asked the fans if they would mind the filming. They did not object.
  • The scenes in Adrian's restaurant were filmed at 'The Victor' cafe in Philadelphia.
  • During filming, Sylvester Stallone once had to break up a fight between two boxers.
  • At the time of the film's release, Sylvester Stallone was the same age (69) that Burgess Meredith was when “Rocky” was released (1976).
  • The film's script originally consisted of 204 pages, but some things were cut, and the ending was rewritten several times. Two different endings to the film were shot.
  • When developing Adonis's style in the ring, Michael B. Jordan drew inspiration from recordings of fights by famous boxers such as Timothy Bradley, Pernell Whitaker and Andre Ward. Andre Ward appeared in 'Creed' (2015) as Danny Wheeler.
  • During one training session, Adonis appears in a t-shirt with the inscription 'Why do I fight? Because I can't sing or dance.' These were the words Rocky said to Adrianne when they were ice skating in the first film of the series.
  • This is the first film since 'The Wire' (2002) to feature Wood Harris and Michael B. Jordan together.
  • This is the first film in the “Rocky” series that was not written by Sylvester Stallone. The screenplay was written by Ryan Coogler in collaboration with Aaron Covington. Coogler and Covington consulted with Stallone during the screenwriting process.
  • Filming of several training scenes took place inside an empty store in Philadelphia, which was converted into a gym.
  • In Polly’s bedroom, which Adonis occupied, you can see photographs of Sylvester Stallone himself as Rocky and Sage Stallone as a child.
  • Phylicia Rashad and Tessa Thompson starred together in this film. The actresses previously worked together on Tyler Perry's 'For Colored Girls' (2010). Rashad and Michael B. Jordan worked together on the series 'Cosby' (1996), where Rashad played the lead role and Jordan appeared as a guest star.
  • The building that, according to the script, houses the “Mighty Mick’s” gym is located in the Frankford Avenue neighborhood of Philadelphia.
  • The film takes place in 1998 and 2015.
  • The film was released on November 25, 2015, exactly 40 years after the day the plot of the first film in the series begins.
