Bajrangi Bhaijaan
Short description
A young mute girl from Pakistan becomes separated from her mother during a trip to India and is left stranded far from home. A devout follower of the Hindu god Hanuman, Pawan Kumar Chaturvedi, finds her and takes it upon himself to return her to her family across the border. The journey proves difficult, as the man and the child must navigate suspicion, closed borders and the simple fact that she cannot tell anyone her name or where she comes from.
Kabir Khan directed and co-wrote the film, which sits between Ek Tha Tiger and Phantom in his filmography. Salman Khan stars as Pawan, with Harshaali Malhotra as the girl, Nawazuddin Siddiqui as a journalist, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Om Puri in supporting roles. Salman Khan also produced alongside the director and Sunil Lulla. Released in July 2015, it was made for about 13 million dollars and earned roughly 150 million dollars worldwide, a strong return.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.8 from 577 votes, while critics gave it 6.3 from 17 reviews, so audiences responded more warmly than reviewers did. The film blends action, adventure, comedy and drama across a long runtime of 159 minutes. It is not connected to any earlier or later film in the director's body of work.
What's left behind the scenes
- The scene featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui at the beginning of the film was inspired by an incident in Karachi involving a Pakistani reporter with the same name as Siddiqui's character – Chand Nawab. Nawab's friends posted a video of the incident on YouTube, where it was seen by director Kabir Khan.
- Emraan Hashmi initially agreed to play the lead role in the film, but later terminated his contract, considering the role insufficiently substantial.
