Maggie's Plan

Maggie Hardin is a New York academic in her thirties who has decided to have a child on her own with the help of a sperm donor. Her arrangement falls apart when she becomes involved with John Harding, an anthropology professor and aspiring novelist stuck in a strained marriage to Georgette Nørgaard, a forceful academic. John leaves Georgette for Maggie, and several years later he and Maggie are married and raising a daughter. By then the passion has faded, and Maggie comes to suspect that John and his ex-wife may still suit each other better than she and John do. She sets about rearranging their lives once more.

Rebecca Miller wrote and directed the film, her fourth feature, following Personal Velocity, The Ballad of Jack and Rose and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee. Greta Gerwig plays Maggie, Ethan Hawke plays John, and Julianne Moore plays Georgette, with Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph and Travis Fimmel in supporting roles. Made for about 2 million dollars, it took roughly 3 million dollars worldwide.

Audience scores are moderate: 6.2 out of 10 on IMDb from close to 18,000 votes and 5.7 out of 10 on TMDB from a few hundred. A critics' rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 184 reviews places it noticeably above those audience figures.
