In 1959 South Dakota, a young man named Kit Carruthers drifts through a dead-end town, working as a garbage collector. He meets Holly Sargis, a teenage girl, and the two begin a relationship. When her father forbids it, Kit shoots him, and the pair takes off across the plains toward the Montana badlands, leaving a trail of killings behind them.
Terrence Malick wrote, produced and directed Badlands, his first feature as director. It stands at the start of a filmography that continues with Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line, The New World, The Tree of Life, To the Wonder, Knight of Cups, Song to Song and A Hidden Life. Martin Sheen plays Kit, with Sissy Spacek as Holly and Warren Oates as her father; Ramon Bieri, Alan Vint and Gary Littlejohn appear in supporting roles.
The film drew strong notices from critics, who rated it 9.2 out of 10 across 61 reviews. Audiences are more measured but still positive: on IMDb it holds 7.7 out of 10 from roughly 84,000 votes, and on TMDB it has 7.5 out of 10 from about 1,400 votes.
