Catwoman
Short description
Catwoman centres on Patience Phillips, a shy graphic designer at the cosmetics giant Hedare Beauty. The company is about to launch an anti-ageing product, and Patience stumbles onto a secret about it that its executives are determined to keep buried. She is killed before she can expose what she has learned, but she is brought back to life with the speed, agility and sharpened senses of a cat. As Catwoman, she begins settling scores, while a detective named Tom Lone becomes intrigued by both sides of her.
The film was directed by Pitof, following his 2001 debut Vidocq. Halle Berry stars, with Benjamin Bratt as Tom Lone; Sharon Stone and Lambert Wilson play Laurel and George Hedare, and Frances Conroy and Alex Borstein appear in supporting roles. The screenplay is credited to John Rogers and Rita Hsiao, and Denise Di Novi and Edward McDonnell produced.
Released in July 2004, the film had a budget of about 100 million US dollars and took roughly 82 million worldwide. Reception was weak: on IMDb it holds 3.5 out of 10 from around 132,000 votes, on TMDB 4.6 out of 10 from over 3,700 votes, and a critics' rating of 3.3 out of 10 from 195 reviews, leaving audience and critic scores close together and both low. It runs 104 minutes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Some flaws were identified during test screenings, forcing the film crew to urgently reshoot a couple of scenes just a month before the premiere.
- Warner Bros. producers originally intended for the film to be released in IMAX format; however, they felt that due to the numerous special effects in the movie, the release deadlines would inevitably be missed and decided not to risk it. The decision to cancel the IMAX release was announced on June 30, 2004. Additionally, one of the promotional titles, "Catwoman: An IMAX Experience," as well as a couple of pun-based slogans, had to be changed.
- During the filming of a chase scene, part of the set collapsed on Halle Berry, and the actress had to be hospitalized. Fortunately, the injury was not serious, and she resumed work the next day.
- Exactly 9 shooting days were spent on the main action scene – the fight between Catwoman (Halle Berry) and Laurel Hedare (Sharon Stone).
- 43 trained cats were used during the filming of the movie, one of which Halle Berry later decided to keep.
- The first promotional trailer, released a few months before the premiere, sparked a storm of criticism and was immediately withdrawn. Soon, it was replaced by a new trailer that did not reveal plot details and contained no dialogue.
- Halle Berry needed 90 minutes of intensive training with instructor Alex Green to perform her first whip crack.
