The Cameraman follows Buster, a street portrait photographer in New York who falls for Sally, a secretary at a newsreel company. Hoping to win her attention, he sells his still camera, buys an old movie camera and tries to break into newsreel work. His early footage is ruined and his efforts make him a joke among the professional cameramen, but Sally encourages him to keep trying. He eventually finds himself in the middle of a major news event.
The film is a silent romantic comedy directed by Buster Keaton and Edward Sedgwick, with Keaton also producing alongside Lawrence Weingarten. Keaton stars as Buster, with Marceline Day as Sally, Harold Goodwin as Stagg, Sidney Bracey as the Editor and Harry Gribbon as a policeman. It was Keaton's eleventh film as director out of thirteen, arriving between College and Steamboat Bill, Jr., and it was his first project at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
Released in September 1928 and running 74 minutes, the film holds an 8/10 rating on IMDb from around 14,000 votes and 7.8/10 on TMDB from 453 votes. Critics rated it 8.7/10 across 20 reviews, placing it above both audience scores.
