Pandora's Box

Pandora's Box follows Lulu, a young woman in a bourgeois German household who lives off the men drawn to her. Her open sexuality unsettles everyone around her, and when Peter Schön, a widowed newspaper publisher, plans to marry someone else, Lulu intervenes and pushes him into marrying her instead, knowing the match will bring trouble. Her charm and carelessness provoke lust and violence in her circle as her fortunes turn.

Directed by G.W. Pabst, the film adapts Frank Wedekind's Lulu plays and was made by the German studio Nero-Film AG. It runs 141 minutes and belongs to the Crime, Drama and Romance genres. Louise Brooks plays Lulu, with Fritz Kortner as Dr. Ludwig Schön, Francis Lederer as Alwa Schön, Carl Goetz as Schigolch, Krafft-Raschig as Rodrigo Quast and Alice Roberts as Countess Anna Geschwitz. The screenplay is credited to Pabst, Ladislaus Vajda and Joseph Fleisler, with Seymour Nebenzal and Heinz Landsmann producing.

Released in January 1929, the film holds a 7.7/10 on IMDb from around 13,000 votes and a 7.4/10 on TMDB from 268 votes. A critics' rating of 8.9/10 from 44 reviews places it above both audience scores.
