Satantango

Satantango is set in a run-down collective farm in post-Communist Hungary, where the remaining residents live in limbo. The farm has collapsed, and a group of inhabitants, among them a doctor and several couples, are waiting on money promised to them now that the cooperative has shut down. Their plans to take the cash and leave are thrown into disarray by word that Irimiás, a former colleague long believed dead, is coming back. His return unsettles the community, and he draws the villagers into a scheme of his own.

Béla Tarr directed and co-wrote the film with László Krasznahorkai, adapting the latter's novel. It followed Tarr's Damnation and preceded Werckmeister Harmonies, Prologue, The Man from London and The Turin Horse. Mihály Víg plays Irimiás, with Putyi Horváth, Miklós Székely B., Erika Bók, László feLugossy and Alfréd Járai among the credited cast of twenty. Shot in black and white across Germany, Hungary and Switzerland on a budget of around two million dollars, it runs 432 minutes.

On IMDb it holds 8.2 out of 10 from over twelve thousand votes, and on TMDB 8 out of 10 from a few hundred. A critics' rating of 8.2 out of 10 from twenty-three reviews sits in line with those audience scores.
