A Woman Is a Woman

Angela, a Danish stripper working in a Paris nightclub, wants a child. Her partner Émile, a bookseller who races bicycles in his spare time, is not ready for fatherhood and refuses. The disagreement turns into a standoff, and Angela raises the possibility of turning to their friend Alfred, who is clearly in love with her. Émile's resistance begins to look less certain.

Jean-Luc Godard directed and wrote the film, his second of twenty-three features, following Breathless in 1960 and preceding Vivre Sa Vie in 1962. Anna Karina plays Angela, with Jean-Claude Brialy as Émile and Jean-Paul Belmondo as Alfred. Carlo Ponti and Georges de Beauregard produced the French-Italian co-production, which runs eighty-three minutes.

A critics' rating of 7.4 out of 10 from thirty-three reviews places professional opinion slightly above the audience scores, though the two are close.
