A Parisian tailor named Maurice travels to a château to collect payment from a young viscount who owes him for a number of suits. Rather than let his family learn of his debts, the viscount passes Maurice off as a baron, and the tailor goes along with the deception once he realises that the woman he met on the road is the princess living at the château. He falls for the reserved Princess Jeanette, and she comes to suspect that something about him does not add up. The story blends romance and comedy with music.
Rouben Mamoulian directed and produced the film, working from a screenplay by Samuel Hoffenstein, George Marion Jr. and Waldemar Young. It was his second directing credit, following Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde the previous year and preceding Becky Sharp in 1935. Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald lead a cast of thirty-two credited performers that also includes Charles Ruggles, Charles Butterworth, Myrna Loy and C. Aubrey Smith.
The film runs eighty-nine minutes and was released by Paramount in August 1932. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.5 from around 5,100 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 from a much smaller pool of under a hundred votes.
